Injuries
When an athlete sustains an injury, the athlete must report this injury to the coaches immediately. Based on training and experience, the athlete will be advised as to the best possible course of action with the injury.
Every coach on our staff is certified in CPR and First Aid and we will have a first aid kit at every meet. We have an athletic trainer on campus. Preventive care is vital in our sport in order to minimize the chances of sustaining an injury.
Here are ways to accomplish this goal:
- Common Colds: Bring warm up clothing (top and bottom) to all practices and meets, even if the weather is warm. Wear them after all training or race events to prevent the chance of catching a cold and to allow the muscles to properly cool down.
- Knee and Leg Soreness: Make sure that the athlete properly and completely warms up and warms down every day. The coaching staff has shown all athletes the proper ways to conduct these necessary exercises. Make sure that running shoes are not worn out (and, make sure that only running shoes are worn).
- Shin Splints: There are exercises that every athlete should do every day to reduce the chances of getting shin splints. Shin splints result from a rubbing of the muscles in the front of the legs by the shinbones. While they are generally not dangerous, they can be very painful. Wearing the right shoes, doing the proper exercises, and treating with ice will reduce the chances of getting shin splints.
