Competitions

  1. DUAL MEETS: These meets bring together two or three schools and usually take place on Thursdays. Every athlete who meets the qualifications standards will compete in these meets. The meet usually starts at 2:45 PM and ends at around 6:00 PM. This year at Beckman we will be competing in Boys and Girls Varsity, JV and Frosh/Soph events. The scoring in each division in dual meets is as follows: 1st place – 5 points; 2nd place – 3 points; 3rd place – 1 point. In Tri-meets (3 teams) the scoring is as follows: 5-3-2-1. Relays score 5 points for first, nothing thereafter. It takes a minimum of 68 points to win a dual meet.

  2. INVITATIONALS: These meets usually take place on Saturdays and bring together many schools (usually 30-50). These meets are all-day and provide individual as well as team awards. Scoring is based on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 basis. These meets provide competition outside of our area of CIF, and are vitally important in the development of our athletes to the elite level. There are restrictions in the number of athletes who can participate, so not every Beckman athlete will participate in each Invitational. The athletes with the best marks in their events will participate. Athletes who do not participate should attend to assist the coaching staff and cheer their teammates on.

  3. LEAGUE PRELIMS AND FINALS: Beckman is in the Pacific Coast League this year, where there are a total of six schools (Beckman, Corona Del Mar, Irvine, Laguna Hills San Juan Hills and University). Athletes must achieve qualifying standards in the prelims in order to reach the finals.

  4. CIF AND STATE MEETS: These meets are at the end of the season and athletes who qualify (by winning league or establishing a qualifying standard) will move on to these meets. This is the ultimate goal for each athlete on a team and individual basis.
